Gauge

13.5 (16, 16) sts x 11 (18, 18) rows = 10 cm / 4 in. measured over back motif (eyelet st of sleeves, star border)

SIZES

XS-S (M-L, XL-2XL, 3XL-4XL) in inches. It is recommended to choose a size based on the wearer’s cross back measurement rather than bust measurement to ensure a good fit.

Finished size measurements:

Back panel (this is a square type shape but not a lie flat square; the sides are longer than usual to create a fluttery effect)

  • Centre to side: 14” / 35.5 cm
  • Side length: 31” / 79 cm

Sleeve piece

  • Sleeve width until dec: 16 (18, 20, 22)” / 40.5 (46, 51, 56) cm
  • Cuff to centre back, inc border: 20 (21, 22, 23)” / 51(53.5, 56, 58.5) cm
  • Dec section length: 10 (11, 12, 13)” / 25.5 (28, 30.5, 33) cm

Border width: 3”/ 7.5 cm

Skill level

Intermediate/Confident: most complex part is squaring the octagonal back section and then picking up the right number of stitches along the edge in the contrast yarn.

Garment Construction

The diagonally set square forming the back is constructed in simple repeating rounds as an octagonal block, corners are added working back and forth along alternate sides to create a square before a border is added. Wide straight sleeves are worked flat starting with the border pattern and ending with a raglan type shaping where they join the upper back. The sleeves are seamed and a small firm edging is worked along the neckline for increased stability. Optional: small buttons may be added to the cuff of each sleeve and around the neckline, along with a discreet button loop on the horizontal corners of the back, enabling the cape to be draped and fastened in various ways.
