Years ago in England, the woolen mills would discard slubs of wool, called "thrums," which knitters would gather and use in their mittens to add extra texture and warmth. This tradition was brought to Newfoundland by the settlers and after being almost forgotten for years, has been recently revived. (source: darktickle.com)

There is no left and right mittens for this pattern: they are both worked identically. At first, you may feel a bit tight in the mitt, but the roving will eventually compress against the inside of the mitt and your mittens will become insulated and very warm!

In addition to the free knitting pattern, you will need the following material to knit your thrummed mittens:

Clearly written

I was able to follow the clearly written directions. My biggest problem was translating to U.S. measurements, but managed to do that.
Thank you for the pattern. The thrumming directions were very clear!

Perfect for toddler mittens!

I amended this pattern to make thumbless mittens for our grandchild. It was great. He loves them and more importantly they stay on!

I enjoyed making the thrummed mittens for my daughter. They are soooo warm and fuzzy inside. The tutorial made creating the thrums easier-once I got the hang of it they are easy to do.

This pattern has the best video on how to make thrums and the easiest way to insert thrums into the stitch below. Thank you!
