This Winds of the South Scarf is inspired by the wide, wind-shaped landscapes of Argentina, home to the guanaco, a native South American camelid known for its incredibly soft and warm fiber.

Guanacos live in open and elevated regions where the winds shape the rhythm of life. Knit with guanaco yarn from TexAndes, this piece is more than just a shawl. It is a tribute to the raw beauty of the Southern Andes and to the animals that inhabit its vast terrains.

The open lacework and flowing curves echo the movement of air across the land. The lace pattern was designed to reflect the movement of wind, with curves that flow gently from end to end. Its deep blue color was chosen to reflect the intense skies often seen in these regions.

Guanaco fiber is considered one of the most exclusive natural fibers in the world. Exceptionally soft, it is found only in specific areas of South America, including Argentina, Chile, Peru and Bolivia. Its warmth and lightness make it ideal for timeless, high-quality garments. As an Argentine textile designer living in Canada, I created Winds of the South as a way to honor both my origins and the living beings that make this creation possible. Each curve and stitch hold a trace of the guanaco’s journey through the open lands of the South. - Lucila Florencia C

NOTE

This is an advanced-level knitting project composed of multiple sections. The piece is built section by section, so you will sometimes have stitches held on the right needle, other times on the left needle, and at certain points on both sides. For this reason, the instructions include step-by-step photos with color changes to help you identify each section clearly. Please note that blocking is essential to define the fabric’s curves and reveal the lace structure. Please handle the piece gently during blocking to preserve the fiber quality and ensure a flawless finish.
