Salouen (Salween in english) is a Southeast Asian river flowing from the Tibetan Plateau south into the Andaman Sea. Throughout most of its course, it runs swiftly through rugged mountain canyons. Its basin, narrow and sparsely populated, is characterized by a very rich biodiversity that is now threatened by the construction projects of numerous hydroelectric dams that disrupt the ecosystem.
