Deflora Mitts and Cowl | Knitting Kit

Here is the latest design of Julie Peng, the Deflora Mitts and Cowl !

The inspiration behind the fingerless mittens is from one of our teachers, Laura DeFlora. She has recurring skin cancer on the back of her hand and is due for surgery next week. I wanted to make a gift for her to wish her well and to protect her hands. As a tribute to my muse, I’m naming it after her last name. The floral motif is based on the Laura flower (or phlox). The back of hand (big flowers) is different than that of the palm (single big flower). - Julie Peng

IN ADDITION TO THIS KIT, YOU WILL NEED THE FOLLOWING MATERIALS

COWL:

• Circular needles of 3.5 mm (US 4) - cable length of 60cm (24'') - or size required to obtain the gauge.
• Stitch markers 5 (1 distinguished for BOR)
• Tapestry needle

MITTS:

• Circular needles of 2.25 mm (US 1) and 2.75 (US 2) - cable length of 60cm (24'') - or size required to obtain the gauge.
• Stitch markers 2 (1 distinguished for BOR)
• Tapestry needle
• Stitch holder or scrap yarn
  

SIZES - ONE SIZE

COWL FINISHED MEASUREMENTS:

• Circumference: 56.5 cm / 22.25"
• Length: 25.5 cm / 10".

MITTS FINISHED MEASUREMENTS:

• Circumference: 20.5 cm / 8"
• Length: 21 cm / 8.25".

GAUGE

COWL: 27 sts x 29 rounds = 10 cm (4'') in colorwork after blocking.

MITTS: 30 sts x 36 rounds = 10 cm (4'') in colorwork after blocking.

NOTE

COWL: Deflora Cowl is knitted in the round from the bottom up with no seams. The circumference of the cowl can be increased by working additional pattern repeats, which will require more yarn, so please budget accordingly.

MITTS: Deflora Mittens are knitted in the round from the cuff up with no seams. Instructions are the same for both mittens unless otherwise indicated. You can use your preferred circular knitting method (9 in [23 cm] circular needles, double pointed needles [DPNs], magic loop). If you opt for circular needles, you may also need to use DPNs or magic loop when working on a smaller circumference, such as the thumb and the initial rounds of the cuff
